Coleman Hawkin's version is slightly slower. Both drummers keep it real simple. The bass/guitar lead the rhythm section in the Hawkin's version. Ride and bass in the faster second version. The power of simplicity: no getting in the face of the soloists. I learned first hand this summer: soloists playing jazz from the classic period (pre 1960 styles) really prefer we stay the hell out of the way.

This blog is an autoethnographic experiment in learning: learning by ear verses learning from instruction books. My thesis is this: that which we struggle by ear to learn will "stick better" and be easier to recall in performance because it engages our auditory, kinetical, and visual senses differently. From ear to hands, not eyes to hands is a different cognitive path.
