Coleman Hawkin's version is slightly slower. Both drummers keep it
real simple. The bass/guitar lead the rhythm section in the Hawkin's version. Ride and bass in the faster second version. The power of simplicity: no getting in the face of the soloists. I learned first hand this summer: soloists playing jazz from the classic period (pre 1960 styles) really prefer we stay the hell out of the way.
