This blog is an autoethnographic experiment in learning: learning by ear verses learning from instruction books. My thesis is this: that which we struggle by ear to learn will "stick better" and be easier to recall in performance because it engages our auditory, kinetical, and visual senses differently. From ear to hands, not eyes to hands is a different cognitive path.

killer joe drum beat
Sometime the drummer play high on all four beats during solos. Skip beats start showing up during solos, but he keeps it real simple.

Blue Monday Drum Chart Fats Domino

YouTube is mastered differently that my Google Music version. More prominent Tambourine in Google. More Ride in YouTube. Go figure.

The Roots "Don't say nuthin'" drum map and beat
As simple as it gets. Interesting in the context in which it's played. The introduction is missing on the YouTube cut.

Going into the last section there is a little confusion as the percussionist switches over to full on brushes.

Guns Are Drawn drop loop
The high hat sounds like its struck with the shank on the sides. Just a tiny bit "sloshy"

Classic EDM Beat 1
This dance is nearly 100 years old. In the 1930s a simple variation of this the basis of Swing music, in the 1970s Disco and now EDM. Cool.

Drum warmups/sightreading exercises using grooves

Tired of the same old same old. Try this. Sight read from the above with a metronome first, then play with the recordings. Pick a different beat each practice session. Lost of irresistible grooves.
Have Fun.

Alone Marshmello
Points of interest. Only one groove has a backbeat. The interludes have a quarter note pulse with the accent on 1 and 3 not 2 and 4.
As always the person who does the transcription learns the most.

Rifftide Coleman Hawkings and Al Cohn 2 versions
Coleman Hawkin's version is slightly slower. Both drummers keep it real simple. The bass/guitar lead the rhythm section in the Hawkin's version. Ride and bass in the faster second version. The power of simplicity: no getting in the face of the soloists. I learned first hand this summer: soloists playing jazz from the classic period (pre 1960 styles) really prefer we stay the hell out of the way.
